A Way In The Wilderness

God will make a way even where there seems to be no way.

"I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert." Isaiah 43:19

Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

How can I keep from worrying about my circumstances when I have to deal with them every single day? It’s not easy, is it? When my life is in turmoil because of my circumstances, it’s hard…make that impossible…to keep my mind from going there. That’s especially true when I have to deal with those circumstances every day and maybe even several times a day.

But by shifting my focus from the problem to the Problem Solver, I don’t have to pitch a tent and stay there. I can take it to God in prayer and leave it there, if only for a little while. It frees me to stop trying to be the know-all, see-all, be-all answer to everyone’s dilemmas, including my own, and just let God be God.

If you’re expecting me to promise this will be effective all the time, don’t hold your breath. I struggle with worry the same as anyone else. And I’m not going to tell you worrying about your prodigal, your cancer, your finances, or your marriage is a sin. I’m just going to remind you worrying doesn’t change anything. If worrying isn’t effective, doesn’t it make sense to take it to the One who can do something about it?

Knowing God can do something doesn’t mean He will. And being willing to accept God’s will when it’s different from our deepest heart’s desire isn’t easy, is it? I wish I could always say, “Your will, Lord, not mine be done.” But on some days, for me, it just isn’t possible.

Those are the days when I pray, “God, I want to want Your will.” And on those days, that really is enough. I also determine in my heart that I won’t waste the pain God allows in my life. That was my mind set when my son Buddy died, and it continues to be my mindset today. For me, it’s the only way I can obey God by not having “other gods before Him.”

Challenge for Today: What might happen if we, just for today, asked God to help us shift our focus from our problems to the Problem Solver and left the outcome in His hands?

Father, thank You for continuing to work in my life. Help me to see You in my circumstances and to trust You with the outcome.
