Psalm 5:3
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the
morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look
up."
1 Chronicles 22:19
“Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your
God…”
|
If you and I are ever going
to succeed in giving God first place in our lives, it
won’t be by accident, nor will it just “happen.” King
David admonished the people to “set your heart and soul
to seek the Lord your God…” (1 Chronicles 22:19).
David had the opportunity to put that admonition to the
test when he was fleeing for his life from his son
Absalom. In Psalm 5, David said God would hear his voice
in the morning, and he would “look up.” Smart move for
him and good advice for you and me.
I really do want to give God first place in my life…at
least, most of the time I do. But I’ve found that if I
don’t “set my heart and soul” to seek him first thing in
the day, it often doesn’t happen. Life seems to get in
the way, doesn’t it?
When my kids were young, I was busy hurrying the bigger
kids along to get ready for school, feeding the baby
and…well, you know what I mean. And, for many of those
years, I was working too, often teaching at a Christian
school. Our house was a constant hamster wheel of
activity, with everyone going at a frantic pace. Yours
probably is too.
After the kids were grown and I was retired, I thought
I’d have more time. But I don’t. Life continues to
happen, and hobbies, interests, and my writing ministry
have taken the place of kids and conflicting schedules.
And I’ve found that unless I “set my heart and soul to
seek the Lord,” it doesn’t happen.
So, what replaces or interferes with my spending time
with the God who knows my name? We have several kids, so
there’s often something going on with them. There’s my
writing group, activities with my Sunday School class,
the regular round of doctor visits seniors have. Then,
of course, there’s Facebook and other time wasters.
If my life is going to be what it should be, what I want
it to be, what God commands it to be, it will have to be
intentional on my part. And it will have to begin by
putting God before anything else I do. That includes
talking on the phone with my kids, writing and
organizing my many projects. Oh, yeah…and it for sure
includes social media, the primary addiction of the 21st
century.
But, do you know what else it includes? Ministry. My
writing is a ministry. Maybe yours is too. Or it might
be teaching a Sunday School class, teaching at a
Christian school, working as a church secretary or even
pastoring a church.
Studying the scriptures to prepare for teaching (or
writing or preaching) isn’t the same as spending time
with the Lord. The one is ministry, and that’s ok. But
it won’t replace the time you and I need to spend with
the Master.
If that time of devotions, Bible reading and prayer
don’t happen first thing in the morning, it’s likely
they won’t happen at all. Life will absolutely get in
the way. And I want more than that, don’t you?
Challenge for Today: What might happen if we,
just for today, spent time with our God before we did
anything else?
Father,
I’m so easily distracted, and I’m sorry for all the
times I’ve let those distractions keep me from spending
time with You. Help me to “set my heart and soul” to
seek You before I do anything else each day.
