March 16, 2020: Coronavirus Part One - What to Do When We're Afraid
HashTags: #fear #Godisable #others #RitaMoritz

Psalm 56:3 “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”

Coronavirus. It has struck fear and even panic among Americans more than any other single thing I’ve seen in my lifetime. Everyone has an opinion about how it should be handled, and people seem paralyzed by fear.

I’m not going to give you tips on cleaning your house, washing your vegetables or making your own hand sanitizer. I’m more concerned about how people are reacting to this new disease. So, as Christians, how should you and I respond?

Don’t panic. It isn’t unreasonable to be concerned. We may even be frightened. As a Christian, I’m not immune to fear. And neither are you. Psalm 56:3 doesn’t say, “If” I’m afraid. It says “When” I’m afraid. But it also gives the solution.

Trust God in the dark. When we’re afraid, that’s the time to trust the God who knows our name and says we are His. It’s the very time to give Him praise.

At our church yesterday, we were singing “Holy, Holy, Holy (Jesus Reigns)” when a passing storm made the lights go off. Then the music went out. And we could not see our hands in front of our faces. But everyone kept singing.

We were on the part of the song that goes, “Let all the earth proclaim, all the people sing, You are holy, You are holy…” And we kept repeating that chorus. Again and again. In the dark. Acapella…without music. As one.

In that moment, I understood as never before about God’s children trusting Him and praising Him in the dark. Because whether the lights are bright and the music loud or we lose the music and even the light…God is still God, and He is worthy to be praised.

It could have been scary in the dark with the thunder booming and the rain pounding on the roof. But it wasn’t. The storm was temporary, the darkness temporary. And we kept on singing.

Show reasonable care. Our pastor and the pastors of other churches are carefully following the updates for our area. Some churches have already cancelled services. Most are following the recommendations of the CDC. We should as well.

Now is the time to show due diligence and to err on the side of caution.

Harry and I will be staying home, but I’m not qualified to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do. And it’s unlikely even the experts can be positive about exactly what to do. However, I can, on the authority of the Word of God, tell you what to do about the fear.

The greater the fear, the greater the need to take it to the One who can do something about the situation. And then to trust Him in the dark because of what you’ve learned of Him in the light.

What might happen if we, just for today, made a decision to trust our God when we are afraid?
