Deuteronomy 6:7
“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and
shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when
you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you
rise.”
|
While we can’t predict the
choices our kids will make when they’re grown, we can
lay some groundwork by setting an example. And I’m not
talking about what we say. I’m talking about what we do.
Because kids can argue with your words, but they have no
choice except to see if your walk matches your talk.
Let’s start with just being faithful.
Faithful in attendance: Our church runs about 250
or so on Sunday mornings. Not a huge crowd, but big
enough. We, like many other churches, have stopped
having a Sunday night service.
However, we do have a Wednesday night service. And the
theme could be, “Lost in Space.” You don’t need to find
a place to sit…there’s plenty of room. Too much, in
fact. I realize people have jobs, the kids have
homework, and our schedules get busier all the time.
But if being faithful to our own church isn’t a priority
for us, we shouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t a priority
for our kids. As parents, we have a responsibility to
live our faith in front of our kids. We can talk all day
long about faithfulness, but cutting church services
isn’t living it before our kids.
Wait a minute! Are you saying we should be there every
time the church doors are open? Actually, I’m not. I’m
only saying we shouldn’t be surprised if church is as
low a priority to our kids as it is to us. And if the
sacred cow of sports is more important now, don’t be
surprised if it’s more important when the kids are
grown.
Faithful in giving: Ouch! If I haven’t already
lost you with church attendance, read on. We demonstrate
what’s important in our lives by where we invest our
time, talent, and treasure.
Our grandkids talk about the vacations we took them
along for, about the times we’ve traveled to see their
events or to see their new babies. But they also know
our faith and our church come first in scheduling. They
know where to find us on Sunday morning and Wednesday
night.
If you and I aren’t investing in our church and the
cause of Christ with our finances, we can’t expect our
kids to consider us faithful. Forget what the preacher
thinks. Our kids see us write the check (or not) and put
it in the offering plate (or not).
Faithful in our walk: If my spirituality begins
and ends at the church doors, I’m not obeying the Lord
by “talking about them when I’m in my house, walking,
lying down or rising up.” God wants and expects us to be
diligent and live for Him in front of our kids. Every
day. Every single day.
That means being consistent, setting an example, living
for the Lord in good times and bad. It means being the
real deal. It means being faithful. The greatest prayer
of our heart needs to be this: “Lord, let it be said of
me that I was found faithful.”
Challenge for Today: What might happen if we,
just for today, determined in our heart to put God first
and to be faithful?
Father,
forgive me for my inconsistency. Help me just to be
faithful and to live for you.
