God will make a way
even where there seems to be no way.

Raising Kids and Living for the Lord - Part 1

Deuteronomy 6:7
“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and
shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when
you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you
rise.”
|
It wasn’t as complicated
raising kids when my own were young. They were in a
Christian school, so you’d expect teachers to leave
Wednesday evenings free so we could go to church. But
even in public schools, teachers knew many, if not most,
students would be in church on Wednesday and didn’t
assign homework.
And it wasn’t only teachers. My kids played soccer, and
games just weren’t scheduled on Sundays. The same was
true about other sports as well. When my kids were old
enough to have a part-time job, we made it clear they
couldn’t work on Sundays or Wednesdays. Period.
As a parent, I did many things wrong, made many
mistakes, and there are some decisions I regret. But
making God and His house a priority isn’t one of them.
Everything else came after that, and everything else
still does.
On a recent trip, Harry and I visited the Creation
Museum and the Ark Encounter, both in Kentucky. While I
was entranced, educated, and often delighted with the
displays, I was shocked by the films featuring Ken Ham.
Ken talked about kids growing up and leaving the church
in vast numbers and doing so for multiple reasons. One
of those reasons is legalism, but right next to it is
hypocrisy. It seems kids are seeing “Christians” as both
dogmatic and deceptive. But why? And what can we, as
parents, do about it?
A friend who has custody of her two grandkids called me
one day and said, “Rita, tell me again why I’m doing
this!” She knows the answer, of course, because any
other option is impossible.
But I reminded her she wasn’t doing it so those
grandkids would choose to live for the Lord when they
grew up. She has no control over that. She’s doing it so
they will see her living for the Lord and will be able
to make an educated choice when the time comes.
The thing is, life is hard. And the older your kids get,
the harder it’s going to be…both for you and for them.
And the answers to the hard questions aren’t going to be
found in TV Guide’s “20 Shows to Help You Live Your Best
Life.” So, what are the answers, and what can you and I,
as parents and grandparents, do?
Proverbs 22:6 about raising our children has done more
to bring parents undeserved guilt and shame than any
other verse I could name. The thing is, Proverbs isn’t a
book of promises. It’s a book of proverbs…it tells us
the way things often or usually work out. And we can’t
predict free choice. But there are some things we can
do.
Challenge for Today: What might happen if we,
just for today, determined in our heart to put God first
and to be faithful?
